IN FLUX
Performance Series @ MASCHER SPACE CO-OP
IN FLUX is a work-in-progress series for emerging and mid-career Philadelphia-based choreographers now in its third year. Last year’s IN FLUX was enthusiastically received by Philadelphia’s contemporary dancer/choreographers and was able to reach a larger community through LiveArts. This year we are continuing to uphold the program’s mission to provide opportunity and motivation to choreographers to fully develop their new contemporary dance works, and to recognize the community where they and their work resides.
A local established artist making work within that genre will moderate the evening and have a dialogue with each of the choreographers about their work in front of the audience of colleagues, friends, relatives, dance enthusiasts and curious public. This conversation will focus on encouraging and helping the choreographer to publicly articulate the vision, questions, and concerns that are driving their work and providing mentorship as to how their work might be better realized. There will be a small amount of audience question and feedback, and audience members will be encouraged to write down their perceptions and feedback to give to the choreographers. A final day of performance will be scheduled in June, at which all IN FLUX Artists may show a more “finished” version of their work for feedback, prior to producing it for the Festival.

Choreographed and performed by: Bidisha Dasgupta
Music: Ravi Shankar, Chants of India

Mangalam means “a salutation” or “auspiciousness” in Sanskrit. This piece invokes the essential elements of the universe. The words of the Sanskrit song portray the elements (translation: earth, water, fire, wind, heavens, sun, moon, planets, life, body, mind, soul) and asks for their blessing. The piece is in the Bharatanatyam style of Indian Classical dance.
